I smoke a lot. It’s a bit (big) part of my personality at this point and as such, I’m often asked what I’m smoking on whenever I run into my fellow stoners. I’ve written reviews mainly for the good people at Black Hippy Farms in the past, but as way to build consistency with my newsletter, I figured it would be best to start doing reviews here. Obviously, if you don’t smoke then this may not mean much to you. But for those that do smoke, welcome to the first of hopefully many reviews that will help you decide your next cannabis purchase.
Recently, I was able to get plugged up Illinois cannabis brand’s Best Kept Secret and their signature Rainbows At Night #3 strain. For those as curious as myself to know the genetics of everything you smoke, this strain is a cross between the ever-popular Zkittlez and White Nightmare (which upon further digging is a cross between Blue Dream and White Moonshine). At first appearance, it is clear that the Blue Dream/Haze lineage stands out as the dominant profiles in this strain just based off the nose, offering notes of an herbal, earthy hash-like aroma that gave me a nostalgic blast from the past. However, how does it smoke? RAN#3 certainly passed the nose and eye test, but I’ve come across many Illinois dispensary packs that certainly looked and smelled good, but had nothing to offer at all after being smoked.
I am pleased to say that this was not the case with Rainbows At Night #3. The nose translated seamlessly into the actual flavor profiles of the terps, giving my palette a delicious array of flavors that seemingly changed the longer I smoked it. Upon the first few inhalations, I detected elements of spicy black pepper blended with blueberry cream and a pungent pinewood flavor, yet about halfway through, a slight candy-like sweetness emerged reminding me of sugar sprinkles, which was a delightful surprise. This was undoubtedly the Zkittlez side of this strain finally coming through to remind consumers that it’s not just there, but it’s also here to leave an impression. The Rainbows At Night name began to make more sense as I truly felt like I smoked through a spectrum of terpenes, practically “tasting the rainbow” if you will.
The effects began to strike me quickly after smoking, feeling a pleasant tingling sensation course from the crown of my head through the rest of my body. This newfound energy gave me wind in an otherwise sluggish afternoon, providing me the focus to complete my daily tasks and the motivation needed to bike 10 miles. Rainbows At Night #3 is ultimately a solid all-day smoke, offering uplifting qualities without ever feeling too racy, as well as an easy-going euphoria that makes it great for social settings, especially with the current season being Summer in Chicago aka the time to be outside.
Best Kept Secret lives up to their name as a brand, as Rainbows At Night feels like a hidden gem in the legal market here in Illinois.
